Keep these things in mind.
- Check the rules for the specific cemetery section before choosing a style.
- Choose the form and inscription space together.
- Review a complete design proof before approving the memorial.
Begin with the cemetery and the space
Bring the cemetery name, the garden or section, and the grave location if you have it. The cemetery may have requirements for the memorial’s shape, material, dimensions, foundation, and accessories. A style allowed in one section may not be suitable in another.
Think about whether the memorial is for one person, two people, or a family. If lettering will be added later, discuss that space at the beginning. Lawrence Memorials serves all cemeteries throughout Central Alabama, and we review the requirements for your particular location with you.
Choose a form that feels right
An upright monument gives the inscription a standing face. Flat markers offer a ground-level tribute, while slant and bevel styles provide different raised profiles. A companion memorial brings two inscriptions into one composition. Benches, cremation memorials, ledgers, and family estates offer additional ways to create a place of remembrance.
Compare the space available for names, dates, artwork, and a personal message. A design can be expressive through its proportions and lettering alone; a sculpted shape or detailed artwork is another option. Start with the form you love, then work through the details with our designers.
Bring the stone, words, and artwork together
Compare granite colors with the intended inscription and artwork. Bahama Blue and Blue Pearl have distinct visual character, and every natural stone varies. Use the online samples to choose a direction, then review physical samples with our team.
Write the names and dates exactly as they should appear. A favorite phrase, meaningful flower, faith symbol, or portrait can add a personal connection. Detailed laser etching is available on black granite; sandblast line artwork is available for all granite colors. Our designers will help you choose an appropriate treatment.
Review the complete memorial before approval
Look at the proof as a whole: the monument and base, the relationship between lettering and artwork, the exact spelling of every name, and the placement of any vases or other accessories. Ask how future lettering would be handled if you need it.
Confirm the quotation and the installation arrangements along with the design. You can begin in our online studio or submit an existing sketch or photograph. Every family is welcome, whether you used our funeral home or another provider.
