MEMORIAL PLANNING / GUIDE 04

Choosing granite colors and engraving

The stone and the artwork work together. Choose the granite you love, then select a lettering and image treatment suited to that material.

A HELPFUL START

Keep these things in mind.

  • Sandblast line artwork is available for every granite color.
  • Detailed laser etchings with black backgrounds are for black granite only.
  • Review physical stone samples and the final proof with our designers.

Begin with the character of the granite

Color, grain, and finish contribute to the character of a memorial before any lettering is added. Bahama Blue has flowing blue-gray movement. Blue Pearl has a crystalline character that catches the light differently. Gray, rose, red, mahogany, and black choices offer other directions to explore.

Online photographs are useful for comparing possibilities, but natural stone varies and screens affect appearance. Look at a physical sample with our designers and discuss the finish you prefer. Consider the inscription and artwork at the same time so the whole memorial feels balanced.

Sandblast designs for every granite color

Two-dimensional line artwork is used for sandblasting. A flower, faith symbol, border, or other line design can be considered alongside your lettering on any of our granite colors. This includes Bahama Blue and Blue Pearl, as well as black granite.

Give the artwork room within the inscription area. An image that looks attractive on screen may need a different scale or position when the actual monument dimensions are considered. Use the studio to explore an idea, then let our designers review the final size, placement, and treatment.

Laser etching is for black granite

The detailed artwork shown with black backgrounds in our library is intended for laser etching on black granite only. Choose a compatible black granite in the studio to explore those designs. Selecting a different granite color changes the available artwork choices.

If a detailed scene or a laser-etched portrait is important to your design, discuss that choice before settling on the stone. A favorite image can be a starting point, but our designers review its suitability and the final production details with you.

Portraits, lettering, and the final composition

A photo cameo offers another way to include a familiar face on your chosen stone. Bring the clearest original photograph you have, and discuss its shape, size, and placement. A photo cameo and a laser-etched portrait are different treatments; the proof should make your choice clear.

Consider the lettering as part of the composition, too. Names, dates, a family name, and a personal message need a readable hierarchy and enough space. Check spelling and dates carefully, then review the stone, artwork, lettering, and accessory placement together before approval.
